We’re at the end of another year, and it’s been a good one for Isabel, and her fans! While remaining typically low key, she has attended several events, filmed a movie or two as well as seeing the release of a couple of projects, and continued to dedicate time to her chosen causes. And then, of course, there was the Immortals hype and promotion running through the year, that culminated in a massive promotional blast and the release of the film itself in the latter part of this year. Continuing our trend of Year In Review posts, for the 3rd year running we take a look back on Isabel’s year and celebrate her continuing rise in Hollywood!
2011 started off quietly for Isabel, with January seeing the release of some new film information, including the first Red Dawn cast still, the first A Heartbeat Away trailer, and a release date for Immortals, a film that was included on several Most Anticipated Films of 2011 lists. Isabel made her first public appearance, in style, on February 9th, attending the world premiere of I Am Number Four in Los Angeles, wearing a gorgeous floaty cream dress and trademark headband. She followed this with appearances at two pre-Oscar events – a Vanity Fair party celebrating Oscar favourite The Fighter, and a Chanel Pre-Oscar Party.
Isabel’s first film release of 2011 was A Heartbeat Away, opening Down Under in March. It received poor reviews, and opened with AU$66,000 at screening nationwide. Isabel appeared in the Australia Daily Telegraph to promote the movie, with a gorgeous new photoshoot and an insightful new interview.
The big news of March, however, was the announcement that Isabel had paired up with actor Lukas Haas to make music! Fans were delighted with their debut single, ‘Made For You’ … only to discover a few weeks later that it was all a hoax, and that the song was actually by a band named The Gift and Isabel and Lukas were just helping to promote them.
April marked the escalation of our excitement for Immortals, with the first official trailer and poster being premiered, and an appearance at WonderCon to promote and talk about the film. Not only did we get lots of photos from these appearances, but we were also treated to new video interviews … Isabel seems even quieter than usual next to the animated Tarsem Singh! Ever the popular new fashionista, Isabel was featured in Vogue magazine in this month too, as part of a multi-celebrity fashion editorial. She also attended the Coachella Music Festival with boyfriend Angus Stone on three separate days, wowing us with her effortless hippie fashion.
May saw two more big moments in Isabel’s career. On May 2nd Isabel wowed fans and fashion critics alike at the highly prestigious Costume Institute Gala in New York City, wearing a stunning coral Louis Vuitton gown and striking gold headpiece. We couldn’t get enough of Isabel’s amazing look here, and we weren’t the only ones, with fans raving about her look on social media networks, and bloggers including her in many Best Dressed lists. We were proud to see the announcement that Isabel would be honoured at the 2011 Young Hollywood Awards, and Isabel graced the red carpet at the event itself held in late May, wearing a white lace Ralph Lauren dress. A humble Isabel told her audience to “always remember to dream” in her acceptance speech. More exciting news followed with the report that Isabel had signed on to star in the thriller Loft, alongside James Marsden and Wentworth Miller. She travelled to Belgium to shoot the movie in July.
Never one to forget the causes closest to her heart, Protect Our Coral Sea released a new campaign video in June, featuring Isabel and her beau Angus Stone! The couple were seen playing around in the hand-filmed video, which was set to a new song by Angus’s sister Julia. Isabel also took the time to write an article for popular news site The Huffington Post about the Coral Sea cause.
We had updates on various movies in June and July – we learned that Isabel had flown back to Canada to do some re-shoots for Immortals, and we were also treated to our first look at Isabel as Sarah in Loft, courtesy of Belgian magazine Humo. The Wedding Party continued to do it’s film festival rounds, with Isabel being nominated for Best Actress at the New York City International Film Festival (although sadly not winning). Isabel joined pals Dave Rastovich and Hannah Fraser at a Minds In The Water screening in August. The documentary, made by Dave, showed the plight of surfers to help sea life.
And now is where the year got really busy for Isabel! With the release of Immortals getting closer, October and November saw Isabel featured in countless magazine covers and spreads! ASOS, Tatler UK, Jalouse and Aussie Vogue all chose Isabel for one of their covers in the latter months of 2011, and Marie Claire (US), Interview and UK Glamour all featuring Isabel in new magazine spreads. And so we were treated to lots of new photoshoots, all styling Isabel in new and different ways.
Between all these magazine photoshoots, Isabel dedicated a few days in October to a new environmental initiative entitled TransparentSea, for which she and Angus took part in a voyage around the Californian coast to “highlight local coastal issues and the plight of marine mammals.” More career accolades came for Isabel from the Beverley Hills Media Film Festival. Public appearances in October were at the ASOS Sydney Launch, and a TransparentSea Awareness Event.
Back to Immortals, and amongst a sea of clips, featurettes and tv spots, was a short but sweet Athena featurette in which we heard Isabel talk briefly about her role, and we also enjoyed many stills of Izzy as the Goddess. The buzz for the film was huge, and barely a day went by without new TV spots, stills or new cast interviews being released. The culmination of the Immortals promotion was a glitzy red carpet premiere on November 8th in LA. Isabel wowed in a Roksanda Ilincic satin gown, and posed with co-stars Freida Pinto and Kellan Lutz on the red carpet, as well as show star Henry Cavill at the after-party. Despite mixed reviews, Immortals opened on November 11th with $1.4 million from US midnight showings, and took a total of $68 million worldwide on it’s opening weekend – pretty impressive, we think!
In the midst of all the Immortals excitement, we had some new film news to cheer about – Isabel was reported to have been cast in a new film by Terrence Malick, to be titled Knight Of Cups. Not only would she be working with this highly acclaimed and innovative filmmaker, but she would co-star with Oscar winners and film greats Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett! This was quite a land for Isabel.
Whilst promoting Immortals, Isabel told press that she would be moving back to Australia by the end of the year, as she no longer feels it essential to live in Los Angeles for work. We think she has made the move Down Under now, and hope she has had a nice, well deserved rest over the holiday season! We’ve loved every minute of following Isabel’s career this year, but we do have our favourites …
Best News of 2011
It was really exciting seeing the hype for Immortals, and reading fans’ reactions to Isabel’s role as Athena having seen the movie. The movie increased Isabel’s profile greatly which we always approve of. Having just seen Terrence Malick’s previous film, Tree Of Life, the news of Isabel’s casting in Knight Of Cups was also a highlight for me, as Malick’s style and vision seems like a perfect fit for Isabel. Just watch Tree Of Life and you will be able to picture Isabel in it.
Favourite Red Carpet Look
I’ve loved seeing Isabel mesh Hollywood glamour with her own personal style this year on the red carpet, and I admire how she takes pieces by world renowned designers and adds her own typically Isabel touches to them. Her floor length coral Louis Vuitton gown with the golden headpiece at the Costume Institute Gala was a major wow moment, and my favourite of the year. Coming in a close second, though, was her super pretty and flirty dress at the I Am Number Four Premiere – made even more pretty by the cute head band and flower in her hair!
We also can’t let this ‘Favourites of the year’ bit go by without mentioning her outfit at Coachella on April 17th. Isabel was a 70s hippy vision in a pale peach Tigerlily Stina dress paired with a mini knitted crop top, minmal accessories, and a feather in her hair.
Has to be Immortals! While Isabel didn’t have a whole lot of screentime, and the movie itself admittedly wasn’t a masterpiece, it was a very enjoyable film, and Isabel was breathtaking in the scenes in which we saw Athena and the gods watching down on the mortals.
Favourite Magazine Cover/Spread
We have quite a few to pick from here – we were certainly treated by the magazines this year! While Isabel’s Tatler UK spread was ethereal and almost fairy-esque, the 22 page spread in Australian Vogue takes the crown for us. With stunning scenery and beautiful couture clothes, the nature themed shoot couldn’t have been more perfect and natural for Isabel. Plus, we can’t argue against 22 pages of Isabel Lucas in a magazine.
And now comes 2012….
Each year seems to be getting better and better for Miss Lucas, and we’re sure 2012 will continue that trend. Red Dawn may eventually get a release in November, and The Wedding Party will reportedly finally get a release in Australia in May. Spring will also see the release of Loft, which is yet another different genre of film for Isabel. Knight Of Cups will shoot soon too. Malick is notoriously secretive about his projects, so while we probably won’t hear much about the plot, we are sure to be in for an absolute treat when the film itself gets released, and it will undoubtedly increase Isabel’s profile for the good.
